Cuban-born pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bulgarian-born percussionist Svet Stoyanov and American-born trumpeter John Daversa met at UM Frost as new faculty. In this energizing program with the Frost Concert Jazz Band they celebrate the multicultural vibrancy of their new musical home inspired in part by “Afro Blue” by Mongo Santamaría and “Manteca” by Dizzy Gillespie. Rubalcaba also performs highlights from his illustrious career with new arrangements by Daversa and others.

The 6th Annual Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival returns to celebrate Hispanic culture plus offer activities and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy on Saturday, October 24th, 12 p.m.- 10 p.m. and Sunday, October 25th, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Biltmore Way from Le Jeune Road to Hernando Street in Coral Gables, FL 33134. The festival, produced and hosted by the Coral Gables Hispanic Cultural Foundation, is paying a special tribute to artist Amelia Pelaez and her painting, “Blue Angel,” which is showcased on this year’s official festival poster. This event is FREE to the public and the local community is invited to attend.

Grant Park begins in 1968, with Martin Luther King Jr.’s final days in Memphis. The story then moves to the eve of the 2008 presidential election, and ricochets between the two eras as it unfolds. Disillusioned and outraged by yet another report of unarmed black men gunned down by police, esteemed journalist Malcolm Toussaint surreptitiously posts an incendiary column that leads to the ouster of his longtime white editor, Bob Carson, and Toussaint’s own mysterious disappearance. Carson and Toussaint subsequently become entangled in a dangerous plot surrounding Barack Obama’s election-night rally in Chicago, which leads to both confronting choices they made during their work in the civil rights movement 40 years prior.
