In the summer of 1968 television news changed forever. Dead last in the ratings, ABC hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. A Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, Gore Vidal was a leftist novelist and polemicist. Armed with deep-seated distrust and enmity, Vidal and Buckley believed each other’s political ideologies were dangerous for America. Like rounds in a heavyweight battle, they pummeled out policy and personal insult – their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted. Ratings for ABC News skyrocketed. And a new era of public discourse was born. Directed with consummate skill by filmmakers Robert Gordon and Sundance Film Festival alum Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom), Best of Enemies unleashes a highbrow blood sport that marked the dawn of pundit television as we know it today.

A mismatched couple meet on board an ocean liner. Jean (Barbara Stanwyck) is a beautiful con artist and Charles (Henry Fonda) is her victim, the heir of an ale fortune. When she’s exposed as a crook and dumped by Charles, Jean decides to exact her revenge: “I need him like the axe needs the turkey.” In the end, will Charles and Jean find love and live happily ever after? Preston Sturges’ classic screwball comedy was selected by The New York Times as the best film of its year and last decade became one of Time‘s All-Time 100. “If I were asked to name the single scene in all of romantic comedy that was sexiest and funniest at the same time,” wrote Roger Ebert, “I would advise … watching as Stanwyck toys with Fonda’s hair in an unbroken shot that lasts three minutes and 51 seconds.”

The Gables Cinema presents three Preston Sturges comedy classics, The Lady Eve, Sullivan’s Travels and The Palm Beach Story, part of the Preston Sturges Labor Day Weekend Trifecta retrospective on Saturday, September 5 – Monday, September 7 at 1:00 pm each day!

A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany in the stunning new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold (BARBARA, JERICHOW). Berlin, 1945: Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish, ex-nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp. But, like her country, she is scarred, her face disfigured by a bullet wound. After undergoing reconstructive surgery, Nelly emerges with a new face, one similar but different enough that her former husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), doesn’t recognize her. Rather than reveal herself, Nelly walks into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she tries to figure out if the man she loves may have been the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Submerged in shadowy atmosphere and the haunted mood of post-war Berlin, PHOENIX weaves a complex, Hitchcockian tale of a nation’s tragedy and a woman’s search for answers as it builds towards an unforgettable, heart-stopping climax.
